Valentines Day Gift Guide for Makeup Lovers

This post contains affiliate links. If you shop through my links I may receive a small commission at no additional cost to you.

If you have a makeup obsessed person in your life, chances are you’re pretty familiar with certain makeup terminology such as dupes, palettes and haul.  But what do you get the makeup lover in your life that has just about EVERYTHING??  Below are a few ideas to get you off to a great start this Valentines Day season.

Beauty Subscription Boxes

Gift Beauty subscription boxes are a great way to try a little bit of everything before making a commitment. You can even get pretty specific and choose boxes that are geared more towards skin care or even clothing and fragrance!

Here are some of my subscription boxes:

I love perfumes, but hate committing to a full bottle that I probably wont see the bottom of for years.

Scentbird solves that problem by letting you purchase a 1 oz size of your favorite perfumes for only $14.95 a month!

This service is a personal favorite of mine!  Every month you get at least 5 full sized beauty products to try for only $21 a month!  Most of my eye shadow palettes have come from Boxycharm! $21 is a steal for products that total over $100 at least every month.

Julep Beauty Box Subscription

Lets not forget about the nail obsessed.  There is something for them too! Julip is a monthly nail subscription service that offers new nail polish colors every month.  They are even starting to branch out into makeup and skincare too.

Every makeup hoarder could use a place to store their spoils. Why not give them a storage solution like the ones below!

The Sodynee Acrylic Makeup Organizer

This piece is great because there is plenty of room for lipsticks, liners and a few shadow palettes plus the see-through acrylic make finding things really easy.

Clear, Acrylic Palette Organizer by Alegory

Did you know that palette organizers were a thing? Well you do know! This piece is perfect for those who want to organize their palette collection in a neat and easy to use way.

Alex 9 Unit Drawer by Ikea

No storage solution would be complete without mentioning the YouTube famous Alex drawers. If your Valentine is a neat freak as well as a makeup lover, then this would be perfect! It does take up a bit of space, but the amount of storage you get in return makes it worth it.

There are a few things to keep in mind when cosmetics shopping for someone else:

  • Stay away from anything skin tone specific. Unless you have access to their holy grail foundation and consealer shades, I would skip this one all together.
  • Avoid buying makeup from places like Ebay. You never know what you’ll end up with.
  • If all else fails…gift cards are the way to go. No beauty lover on earth would say no to a Sephora gift card!

Christmas Stash Challenge Day 1

I’m a little bit low-key obsessed with makeup sub-reddits! The r/MakeupRehab sub-reddit in particular. This year user u/LuminousApsana posted an Advent inspired makeup challenge designed in part to use up makeup that we already have to create different themed looks.

My Anti-Beauty Treatment…Haul???

This post may contain affiliate links.  I may earn a small commission when you shop through my links.  This will cost nothing to you or impact you shopping experience in any way.

Okay, so i know the title doesn’t exactly trip off the tongue, but bear with me. I really enjoy a good anti-haul post as much as the next girl. But I got to thinking. We’re supposed to be buffed and polished from head to toe, or else it seems like we don’t care what people think of us. Well, I do care what other people think, just not enough to actually do anything about it!

I’m a makeup junkie, I fully admit that! I have been ever since my mother brought home her makeup kit from Wilfred Beauty Academy (This place is still around apparently) full of the brightest colors that the 80’s had to offer. But, because I love makeup so much, people might see me as “high maintenance”. I’m far from it actually. Below is a list of beauty treatments that I have no time for or interest in.

Nail Art

I’m not interested in having pretty nails or anything nail related really. I tried to get into the trend in college. I would spend what little money I had on a full set only to wish that I hadn’t gotten them done in the first place. I hate that way they feel so much! Even a simple manicure is more than I’m capable of maintaining. I’m a mother and children are gross! There, I said it! I spend my days cleaning up disasters and washing my hands more than an ER nurse! There’s no gel manicure on earth that can stand up to that!

Exception: Pedicures

Now I’m not talking about crazy nail polish colors or decals or anything like that. I’m talking about trying to keep from looking like I can climb a tree bare foot or shred my sheets Edward Scissorhands style!

Wigs, Weaves or Long Hair in General

This is a bit of a touchy subject for me. I’ve had a love/hate relationship with my hair my entire life (that story deserves its own post). For a long time, I associated long hair with femininity. And dammit, I was gonna have long hair by hook or by crook! But after trying out weaves and wigs of varying styles and lengths, I discovered something. I. Hate. Long. Hair! I think it can look pretty and does look pretty on other people, but I cannot stand the way it feels. I hate the feeling of hair on the back of my neck or my face. There is also the extra fun fact that I’m hot all the damn time and having a bunch of hair sticking to my sweaty face and body is not my idea of a good time.

Exception: I’m a woman, and I reserve the right to change m my mind at anytime!

Fashion:  Like, real fashion!

Oh boy! This is a tough one. One I’ve hand, I’m too old to shop fast fashion places like Forever 21 and Charlotte Ruse, but I still feel too young for places like Talbots and Chico’s.  Then there’s the whole “mom” thing where I don’t want to wear anything too fancy because it’s just going to end up covered in BBQ sauce and snot.  But then again, I don’t want to live in yoga pants and stained t-shirts forever.  Plus there’s the fact that I’m incredibly cheap.  That doesn’t help either.

I love to browse the Instagram’s of places like Elloqui and eShakti, but they are quite a bit out of my price range. However, it is time for me to start dressing like an actual grown-up.

Exception/Solution: Thrift!

#SecondHandfirst! I resell clothing on eBay part-time.  Because of that, I know what to look for at thrift shops and online places like Thredup!  My goal is to try my hand at a capsule wardrobe full of higher quality pieces.

I’m also looking for a little help in the styling department by trying out Stitch Fix!  Somethings you just have to outsource things!

I love makeup!  I’ve picked my vice.  If I try to be stylish from literal head to toes, I would be dead broke in no time.

My Super Simple Skincare Routine

FTC Disclosure:  This post contains affiliate links, which means I receive a small commission if you make a purchase using this link, which is a great way to support my blog.

The amount of time that I spent searching for a foundation that would give me “perfect” looking skin is really embarrassing. I bounced from one heavy, full coverage foundation to the next!

The truth is, foundation only looks as good as the skin underneath it. So like any beauty aficionado, I turned to YouTube! I was peppered with the latest and so-called greatest routines and product recommendations.

I settled on an overly complicated 11 step skincare routine supposedly made popular in Korea. After rummaging through my stash of samples and half used (and forgotten about) products, I found enough stuff to slap on my face.

I tried this routine for about a week before I threw in the towel. My skin was NOT happy! It actually looked angry. I had new breakouts, new dark spots and no glow in sight. My pores looked worse than they ever had!

So after stumbling onto this video by Kiki G, I decided to boil down my routine to the absolute bare necessities. She does a great job of explaining exactly why each step that she recommends is necessary.

I asked myself what my skin actually needed. It needed to be clean (which includes removing my makeup first), moisturized and protected.

These few products helped to get my skin back in balance:

Ponds Cold Cream Cleanser (The one with the green lid)

Sometimes and oldie is a goodie! The cleanser does a wonderful job of breaking down my makeup before I wash my face.  After slathering it on in a thin layer, I let it sit for 5 minutes or so before removing it with a warm washcloth.

Cerave Renewing SA Cleanser for Normal Skin

This cleanser is amazing!  It’s a gel cleanser with a light foaming action that doesn’t strip my skin.  It has the added bonus of salicylic acid for gentle daily exfoliation.

Garnier SkinActive Moisture Bomb Moisturizer with SPF 30

I was so excited to find this moisturizer!  It’s a super light weight, non-greasy moisturizer that has the added bonus of a broad spectrum spf.  It absorbs fast too!

Garnier SkinActive Ultra-Lift Sleeping Cream

Even though I have oily skin, it still tends to get dehydrated overnight. This helps my skin retain moisture overnight and my skin feels super soft in the mornings!

Cerave Eye Repair Cream

IMG_2712 (Edited)

I wanted a simple, no bells or whistles eye cream that would help with fine lines and dark circles.  This cream really does foot the bill!  Cerave is a cult favorite for a reason.  I noticed a difference after a few weeks.  My lines were softer and my dark circles were less noticeable.

I plan to add some treatment products to my routine once I do a little more research.

What do you think is missing from my routine??

I’d love to know what some of  your must have skincare products are?? Let me know in the comment section below!

Review: Tarte Rainforest of the Sea vol. II

This was the all-star item from the August Boxycharm that made me subscribe the instant the waitlist was lifted. Can we stop and appreciate how beautiful this palette is😍

I wanted to like this shadow palette so badly. The swatches looked…promising. But only 2 or 3 colors were saturated enough for my skin tone.

These swatches are under primer. The dark indigo shade was really beautiful swatches, but oxidized like crazy after a few hours.

This palette falls under the, “I couldn’t probably make it work if I had to” category.

This is freshly applied shadow…under a primer! Doesn’t look like much which is disappointing.

I read somewhere that the shadows apply better with fingers over brushes, so I may try that next.

I’ll save my review of these GIANT lashes from PUR Cosmetics for another post!

Have you tried this palette? Did it work for you? Let me know in the comments section!

No Makeup, Makeup Look Using All Drugstore Products

I wish that I could say that getting a, “No, I woke up like this!” makeup look was as easy as slapping on some tinted moisturizer, mascara and lip gloss and running out the door.  My dark circles, large pores and hyperpigmintation will not let me do that!

So I present to you, my no makeup, natural look using a product list as long as my arm!

Just a reminder: I have affiliate links shared throughout this post and if you follow them and make a purchase, I may make a small commission! Not every link will be an affiliate link. Thank you for supporting my blog!

Black Radiance True Complexion BB Cream in Coffee Glaze $4.99 for 1 fl oz.

This stuff is amazing!  It’s as light as a tinted moisturizer with the coverage of a foundation (depending on your application technique)

I like to apply mine with an elf foundation brush.  It gives me a nice amount to coverage and blends seamlessly.

Maybelline Dream Brightening Creamy Concealer in Deep #60 $6.49 for .11 oz.

I like to apply this under my BB cream.  I know you’re supposed to apply concealer after foundation, but this works better for me.  I let it dry down a little bit, then stippled my BB cream on top so I don’t disturb the concealer.

Elf Sheer Finishing Powder in Deep/Dark $6.00

This powder isn’t my favorite because it reads really cool, almost grey on my skin.  However, it did an okay job of setting my BB Cream if i use a really light hand.

Elf Blush Quad in Dark $6.00

This blush quad is a super economical choice that works with many looks.  The quad comes with two cool shades and two warm shades in matte and shimmer.  I chose the matte warm color for this look.

Maybelline brow precise fiber volumizer $8.92 for 0.27 fl oz

Maybelline is really upping their brow game!   Whats great about this brow product is that it has tiny fibers that look like actual brow hair.  The more layers you add, the darker it gets.

Covergirl Queen Collection Jumbo Gloss Balm in Q875 $6.94 for 0.13 oz

This chubby little twist up stick is amazing!  It gives a tiny bit of color and moisturizes like crazy.  This is one of those lip products I can apply without a mirror!  The color is the perfect glossy nude that can work on a lot of skin tones because it’s so sheer.

Elf Makeup Mist & Set $3.00 for 2.02 oz

This setting spray is just…meh.  I don’t expect a great setting spray at this price. I actually prefer to use it as a primer instead of a setting spray.  It feels just tacky enough to give my foundations something to stick too.

Loreal Paris Lash Paradise Waterproof Mascara in Blackest Black $8.97

I hear this is supposed to be a dupe for the Better Than Sex mascara from Too Faced.  I can’t compare because I’ve never used the Too Faced before.  I can say that this has become me holy grail mascara.  I like that It can build on itself without turning into one giant eye lash!

What are some of your favorite no-makeup makeup products??

Christmas Stash Challenge Day 3

If I remember correctly, the Barbie Loves MAC  was released the same year I started working for Lancome in 2006 ( please correct me if I’m wrong). I probably spent more time at their counter ogling the collection and those amazing pictures of the models imbibing the essence of Barbie!

I’ve wanted to recreate this look since that day. I’m finally getting the chance thanks to u/LuminousApsana’s Christmas stash challenge from the r/MakeupRehab subreddit.

Product List

  • BH Studio Pro Ultimate Artistry Shadow Palette ( I’m starting to get a lot of use out of this palette)
  • MAC Brow Pencil in Spiked
  • Wet n Wild Waterproof liquid Liner
  • Elf blush quad in dark
  • Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor (the label fell off so I have no idea what color this is)
  • CoverGirl Queen Collection All Day Flawless 3 in 1 Foundation in Mocha
  • CoverFX Illuminating Setting Spray
  • Black Radiance True Complexion Hydrating Powder Foundation in Warm Almond

I was half tempted to wear this outside…but I chickened out!

August/September Empties

It takes me an embarrassingly long time to get through a product. My attention span is too short to NOT be seduced by new packaging and the latest and greatest the cosmetics industry has to offer. So when I actually make it to the bottom of any product, it’s kind of a big deal (for better or worse)!

Black Radiance True Complexion BB Cream

This little BB cream has gotten me through the entire summer! It’s light weight with amazing coverage for a BB cream and makes my skin look amazing. I’m going to cut the tube in half to sqeueeze a little more life from this tube!

Will i repurchase this?

I already have! There is a brand new tube waiting for me on my makeup desk.

Neutrogena Acne Stress Control Tripple Action Toner

This bottle lasts ne a long time because I only havw to use it once a month. My period does a real number on my skin by pumping more oil than normal This exfoliates and keeps mt skin in balance.

Will I repurchase this?

When i find something that works, I never stray too far! This is on my shopping list for sure.

NYX Dewey Finish Setting Spray

elf Makeup Mist and Set

Wet n Wild Natural Finish Setring Spray

I’m starting to wonder if setting sprays are just a gimmick. These really do help with minimizing that overly powdery look. Well so does water and not using too much powder in the first place.

I haven’t noticed my makeup wearing any better with these.

Will I repurchase these?

I think I’ll pass on any of these and probably any other setting spray for a while.

Pond’s Cold Cream Cleanser

I am a big fan of double cleansing! It has improved my anon so much. I didn’t want to spend crazy accounts of money for an oil cleanser. Pond’s Cold Cream has been around since forever for a reason. Nothing does a better job of dissolving makeup.

Will I repurchase this?

Already have!

Sometimes brand i or product loyalty can be a real money saver. When you know whatyou like it’s easier to NOT spend money on shotty new things.

How to repourpose (seemingly) useless makeup

I am a huge fan of beauty boxes! They are a great way to beef up your collection for a modest investment. Depending on what box service you choose, the value can be incredible!

Subscription boxes have a down side though. I was with Ipsy for almost a year before it dawned on me that I was seeing the same items over and over again, in a different makeup bag. Whats worse, no matter how many times I updated my profile, the colors they chose for me rarely seemed to work. That meant I was stuck with tons of pinky-mauve liquid lipsticks that I would never use.

One solution is to join BST (buy/sell/trade) makeup groups and swap or sell you unwanted items. If that’s not something you’re interested in, then re-purposing may be the way to go!

Liquid lipsticks make awesome blushes!

I have super oily skin, but I have always loved the look of cream blushes. They always look so natural and gave off the healthiest flush, unless you have oily skin. Then you end up looking overly slick and greasy.

In my August Boxycharm, I received a #grlpwr liquid lipstick in the color Date Night. This was yet another pinky-mauvy nude color that was all the rage this year. It’s a gorgeous shade and the kind of color brown girls like me can “make work” by adding a darker lip liner. But I’m never really in the mood to manipulate lip colors, so they end up collecting dust in a drawer someplace.

One day I was playing around and swatching some of my lip colors when I thought this color would make an awesome blush color, and I was right! It dries super fast so I dabbed it on the apples of my cheeks and voila! Perfect flush of color!

Useless Mascara

I know what you’re thinking! How can mascara possibly be useless. Well, it all depends on the formula, the brush and the color. I’ve received mascaras that hardly showed up no matter how many layers I pop on.

One easy fix is to use a small eyeliner brush and, well, use it as an eyeliner! Problem solved.

Sheet Masks a plenty!

I’m starting to collect a small country’s worth of sheet masks from all of my subscription boxes. I get it! They’re small, light, easy to ship and have a big moment right now. But if you’re anything like me, sitting still with one of these slimy masks on for 20 minutes can feel like an eternity!

The best solution I’ve come up with is to snip off the corner of the mask packet and squeeze the contents into a little pot or jar with a lid! Now you have your own little pot of essence without the downtime.

Multiple items that you literally have no earthly use for

Sometimes there is no easy fix. Sometimes you end up with a basket full of sample sized products that you may never touch. There was one point with Ipsy where I was getting dry shampoo month after month. I’m a black women with natural hair, what am I going to do with dry shampoo???

A great use for mini products is to either donate them, do an Instagram or YouTube giveaway, or even sell them in lots on Ebay!

What is your favorite way to repurpose makeup??

How to get the most out of makeup try on apps

So I’ve been feeling like absolute garbage the past few days. My kids have brought home a fun little bug (thanks kids!). I was planning to do a FOTD, but putting makeup on is the last thing I feel like doing.

I have found a way to get my makeup fix without applying a stitch of makeup! There is, in fact, an app for that! My favorite by far is an app called Perfect365. This app lets you take selfies and accurately apply a wide range of makeup looks. You can even apply makeup to live videos of yourself.

You can take an ordinary picture like this and instantly try on tons of different looks, like:

And my favorite…

You can even see side-by-side before and after!

This app has looks by makeup artists and makeup brand along with product recommendations!

So here are a few tips to get the most out of apps like these:

  1. Take selfies face natural light if possible.
  2. At minimum, put your brows on! I tried on a few looks without doing this first and YIKES!!’
  3. Don’t be afraid to try some outrageous looks! You might just surprise yourself!

At least the lipstick is pretty!

I would LOVE to see what looks you come up with in this app! Try it for yourself and tag me @cuteandwicked on Instagram!

This post was NOT sponsored by Perfect365. All opinions are my own.
